Big Sable Point Light
Rising from the windswept dunes north of Ludington, Michigan, Big Sable Point Light has guided mariners along Lake Michigan’s eastern shore since 1867. Originally built with a yellow brick tower, the lighthouse was later encased in iron plates and painted with its distinctive black-and-white bands to prevent weather damage. The light remains active today under Coast Guard operation. While the tower is not open to public climbing, visitors can hike the 1.8-mile trail through Ludington State Park to view it up close. Golden hour before sunset offers the best photography, with the lighthouse silhouetted against Lake Michigan. Nearby, explore Ludington State Park’s beaches, the Badger car ferry, and Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area.
