Mackinac Island State Park
Michigan (Mackinac County)
Mackinac Island State Park covers 1,800 acres across roughly 80 percent of Mackinac Island, making it one of Michigan’s most unique state parks — and one of America’s oldest, predating Yellowstone. Accessible only by ferry from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace, the island famously bans motor vehicles, so you’ll explore by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage.
The park’s crown jewel is Fort Holmes, the island’s highest point, offering sweeping views of the Straits of Mackinac and both peninsulas. Below, Arch Rock rises 146 feet above the Lake Huron shoreline — a natural limestone formation that’s been drawing visitors for centuries. The 8.2-mile perimeter road loops the entire island and ranks among the finest cycling routes in the Midwest, with lake views nearly the whole way.
Beyond the shoreline, interior trails wind through old-growth cedar and birch forests to lesser-known formations like Sugar Loaf and Skull Cave. History buffs will find Fort Mackinac, a restored 18th-century British outpost with live cannon demonstrations throughout the summer. The park also preserves several Native American and fur-trade-era sites.
Peak season runs June through August, when ferries operate frequently and the island’s fudge shops and Victorian-era Grand Hotel are in full swing. September brings smaller crowds and stunning fall color. Note that camping is not available on the island itself — most visitors stay at island inns or make it a day trip from the mainland.
Come for the scenery, stay for the rare experience of a place where the clock genuinely slows down.
