Bass River State Recreation Area
Tucked into the sandy lowlands of Ottawa County, Bass River State Recreation Area sprawls across 1,665 acres where the Bass River meets the Grand River near Lake Michigan’s eastern shore. This is west Michigan at its quietest — a patchwork of floodplain forests, oak savannas, and marshlands that rewards visitors willing to slow down and explore.
The terrain here tells a story of water. Spring flooding feeds the wetlands that attract herons, egrets, and migrating waterfowl, making Bass River a reliable birding destination from April through October. Hikers and mountain bikers share roughly 13 miles of trails that wind through rolling wooded hills and open meadows, with enough elevation change to keep things interesting without being punishing.
Hunters know this place well — the mix of upland forest and lowland marsh supports healthy populations of deer, turkey, and small game across multiple seasons. Anglers work the river corridors for bass, pike, and panfish, particularly in the quieter backwater channels where the current slows.
Fall is arguably the best time to visit. The hardwood canopy lights up in October, the summer crowds thin out, and the trails firm up after the muddier spring months. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions cooperate.
Bass River sits just 20 minutes from Grand Haven and the Lake Michigan beaches, making it an easy inland detour for coast-bound travelers looking for something wilder and less crowded. Come for a few hours of trail time; you might end up staying all day.
