Grand Haven State Park sits where the Grand River meets Lake Michigan, occupying 48 acres of prime shoreline in Ottawa County. What it lacks in size, it makes up for with one of the most iconic beach settings on Michigan’s west coast — a wide sweep of sugar sand anchored by the historic Grand Haven South Pierhead Lighthouse, one of the most photographed landmarks on the Great Lakes.

The beach is the main draw. A half-mile of Lake Michigan shoreline offers swimming, sunbathing, and some of the best sunset watching in the state. The pier walk out to the catwalk-connected lighthouse is a must-do, especially when waves crash dramatically against the breakwall during fall storms. Fishing from the pier produces perch, steelhead, and salmon depending on the season.

The park’s campground is unusual — 174 modern sites sit directly on the beach, making it one of the few places in Michigan where you can fall asleep to the sound of Lake Michigan waves from your tent. Sites book months in advance for summer weekends, so reserve early through the Michigan DNR.

Visit late June through August for warm water and peak beach conditions. September and October bring smaller crowds, stunning color along the nearby lakeshore, and powerful wave action that draws photographers. The Grand Haven Musical Fountain, just across the channel, runs summer evening shows visible from the park.
