Saugatuck Dunes State Park sits along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Allegan County, offering one of the most pristine coastal experiences in the state. Spanning 1,000 acres, the park protects over two miles of undeveloped beach backed by towering coastal dunes that rise more than 200 feet above the water — a landscape largely unchanged from what early settlers would have encountered.

What sets Saugatuck Dunes apart is the effort required to reach the beach. There are no paved paths or boardwalks leading to the shore. Instead, visitors hike roughly a mile through a coastal forest of beech, maple, and oak before the trail opens onto a wide, uncrowded stretch of sand. That walk filters out the crowds, making this one of the quietest Lake Michigan beaches you’ll find during peak summer months.

The park’s trail system covers about 2.5 miles through varied terrain — rolling dunes, wooded ridges, and interdunal wetlands that support a surprising diversity of plant life. Birding is excellent, particularly during spring and fall migration when warblers move through the forest canopy. The beach itself is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing.

Visit between late June and early September for warm water and the best swimming conditions. Spring and fall bring fewer visitors and spectacular color along the trails. Winter hikers will find solitude and dramatic ice formations along the shore.

Pack water and wear sturdy shoes — the sandy trails demand more effort than the distance suggests, but the payoff is worth every step.
