Grand Haven North Pierhead Light

Grand Haven North Pierhead Light

Lake Michigan · Michigan

Standing at the end of Grand Haven’s iconic catwalk pier on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore, this striking red lighthouse has guided mariners into the Grand River channel since the early 20th century. The steel-encased tower, paired with its connected fog signal building and elevated catwalk, creates one of Michigan’s most photographed lighthouse scenes.

The light remains active and is not open to public climbing, but visitors can walk the pier for close-up views. Sunset is the prime photography window, with the lighthouse silhouetted against Lake Michigan’s horizon.

Nearby, enjoy Grand Haven State Park’s sandy beach, the downtown boardwalk, the Musical Fountain — one of the world’s largest — and the charming shops along Washington Avenue.
