Mount Holyoke Range State Park
Stretching across 3,000 acres of Hampshire County, Mount Holyoke Range State Park encompasses one of the most dramatic ridgelines in southern New England. The park follows a seven-mile east-west volcanic ridge that rises sharply from the Connecticut River Valley, offering hikers sweeping panoramic views from multiple summit overlooks.
The centerpiece is the Summit House on Mount Holyoke itself, a historic structure perched at 942 feet where visitors have gathered since the 1820s to take in views that Thomas Cole and Frederic Church immortalized in landscape paintings. On clear days, the vista stretches across the Pioneer Valley’s patchwork farmland to Mount Greylock and the Berkshire Hills.
The Metacomet-Monadnock Trail (now part of the New England National Scenic Trail) traverses the full ridgeline, connecting a series of rocky summits including Mount Hitchcock, Bare Mountain, and Long Mountain. Trail difficulty ranges from moderate valley loops to strenuous ridge scrambles with exposed basalt ledges. Birdwatchers come for migrating raptors in fall, while spring wildflower displays blanket the lower slopes with trillium and lady slippers.
Mountain biking and cross-country skiing are popular on the wider fire roads, and the park’s forests support excellent wildlife viewing — look for porcupines, barred owls, and the occasional fisher cat.
Fall foliage season, typically mid-October, transforms the ridge into a corridor of color and draws the biggest crowds. Spring and early summer offer quieter trails and the best wildflower conditions. Arrive early on weekends, as trailhead parking fills quickly during peak months.
