Holyoke Heritage State Park

Tucked into the heart of downtown Holyoke along the historic canal system, Holyoke Heritage State Park offers something rare among Massachusetts state parks: an urban park built around industrial heritage rather than wilderness. At just 7 acres in Hampden County, this compact park tells the story of Holyoke’s rise as a planned industrial city, powered by the Connecticut River and an intricate network of canals that once drove paper mills and textile factories.

The park’s centerpiece is the Heritage State Park Visitor Center, housed in restored mill buildings where exhibits trace Holyoke’s immigrant communities and manufacturing past. The Children’s Museum is a major draw for families, with hands-on exhibits that keep younger visitors engaged. A vintage merry-go-round operates seasonally, its hand-carved horses a beloved local tradition.

Walking paths follow the canals, offering a unique blend of industrial architecture and green space. The park connects to broader trail networks along the Connecticut River, and the nearby Holyoke Dam provides good spots for watching migratory fish runs in spring. Picnic areas and open lawns give the neighborhood a gathering place that buzzes during summer concerts and cultural festivals.

Camping is not available here given the urban setting, but the park makes an excellent stop on a broader western Massachusetts trip. Visit between May and October for the fullest event calendar and open-air programming.
