J.A. Skinner State Park
Massachusetts (Hampshire County)
Perched atop Mount Holyoke in Hampshire County, J.A. Skinner State Park delivers one of the most celebrated views in New England. Its 843 acres encompass the summit where Thomas Cole painted *The Oxbow* in 1836 — and that dramatic bend in the Connecticut River still looks just as stunning today. The historic Summit House, a former hotel dating to the 1800s, crowns the peak and serves as a visitor center during warmer months.
The park’s signature hike follows the Halfway House Trail from the base to the summit, a moderately steep 1.5-mile climb that rewards with panoramic views of the Pioneer Valley, the Holyoke Range, and on clear days, Mount Monadnock to the north. For an easier approach, a paved auto road reaches the summit seasonally (typically May through October). The park also connects to the broader Metacomet-Monadnock Trail for longer through-hikes along the ridgeline.
Spring brings wildflowers and migrating raptors. Fall foliage from the summit is extraordinary — the river valley turns into a patchwork of orange, red, and gold that’s hard to beat anywhere in Massachusetts. Summer weekends draw crowds, so arrive early for parking at the summit lot.
While the park doesn’t offer traditional campsite camping, it’s an easy day trip from Northampton and Amherst, both just minutes away with plenty of dining and lodging options. Skinner State Park proves you don’t need a wilderness expedition to find a world-class view.
