Tuckahoe State Park stretches across nearly 4,000 acres of Maryland’s Eastern Shore in Queen Anne’s County, offering a quieter alternative to the state’s more heavily visited parks. The park follows Tuckahoe Creek, a scenic waterway that winds through hardwood forests, freshwater marshes, and open meadows — creating one of the most diverse natural landscapes on the Delmarva Peninsula.

The creek itself is the main draw. Paddlers can launch canoes and kayaks directly from the park and drift through corridors of bald cypress and river birch that feel surprisingly wild for a park just 50 miles from the Bay Bridge. The 20-mile trail network ranges from flat, easy loops ideal for families to longer routes that connect through Adkins Arboretum, a 400-acre native garden embedded within the park’s boundaries.

Fishing is productive here — largemouth bass, bluegill, and catfish populate the 60-acre Tuckahoe Lake, and a fishing pier makes bank access easy. Mountain biking trails thread through the forested sections, and equestrian trails draw riders from across the region.

The park operates a campground with both tent and RV sites, along with camper cabins for those who prefer a roof overhead. Sites are shaded and well-spaced, making it a solid base for a weekend of exploring the upper Eastern Shore.

Spring and fall are the best seasons to visit — mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and peak color along the creek corridor. Summer brings humidity but also the best paddling conditions. Winter offers solitude and excellent birding along the marshes.
