Matapeake State Park
Maryland (Queen Anne's County)
Matapeake State Park sits on the western shore of Kent Island in Queen Anne’s County, offering one of the best vantage points of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. At just 21 acres, this compact park punches well above its size — its location on the site of the former Matapeake Ferry Terminal, which carried vehicles across the bay before the bridge opened in 1952, gives it both historical character and prime waterfront access.
The park’s 800-foot fishing pier is the main draw, stretching into the Chesapeake Bay where anglers pull in striped bass, bluefish, white perch, and croaker depending on the season. No boat required — this is some of the best shore-based fishing on the Eastern Shore. A small sandy beach provides a spot for swimming and wading, with calm waters that work well for families with young children.
Beyond fishing and swimming, visitors come for picnicking, hiking short wooded trails, and kayaking along the sheltered shoreline. The park also features a boat ramp for those bringing their own watercraft. Birdwatchers will find ospreys, herons, and migrating waterfowl throughout much of the year.
Late spring through early fall is the best window for visiting, with summer offering the warmest water and most active fishing. Fall brings fewer crowds and excellent light for photography, especially at sunset when the Bay Bridge frames the western sky.
Expect a relaxed, uncrowded experience — Matapeake is a local favorite that many travelers driving over the bridge never think to stop and explore.
