Martinak State Park sits where Watts Creek meets the Choptank River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, a 107-acre retreat tucked into Caroline County that punches well above its size. The park’s defining feature is its waterfront access — the Choptank River boat ramp puts anglers within reach of largemouth bass, catfish, and perch, while Watts Creek offers quieter paddling through wooded shoreline.

The campground here is a genuine draw, with both electric hookup sites and rustic tent camping shaded by mature hardwoods. Four camper cabins provide a middle ground for visitors who want to sleep near the water without roughing it. Sites fill on summer weekends, so reservations through the Maryland DNR system are worth making early.

A network of short trails loops through bottomland forest and along the creek, making for easy walks rather than strenuous hikes. The park maintains a playground, picnic pavilions, and a nature center housed in a restored 19th-century farmstead that traces the agricultural heritage of the Choptank River valley. Birding is quietly excellent — great blue herons, ospreys, and migrating warblers move through the riparian corridor seasonally.

The best window runs from late April through October, when the campground is fully operational and the fishing peaks. Spring brings wildflowers along the creek banks, while fall delivers Eastern Shore color without the crowds of western Maryland parks.

Martinak works best as a base camp for exploring the upper Eastern Shore — unhurried, water-oriented, and refreshingly uncrowded even in peak season.
