Warren Island State Park

Sitting in the heart of Penobscot Bay, Warren Island State Park is one of Maine’s best-kept secrets — a 70-acre island accessible only by boat. That extra effort to reach it is exactly what makes it special. There are no cars, no crowds, and no cell service to speak of. Just spruce-fir forest, rocky shoreline, and some of the most dramatic coastal views in Waldo County.

The island is a favorite among sea kayakers paddling the Maine Island Trail, and it serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring the surrounding islands and inlets of upper Penobscot Bay. Hiking trails loop through dense woodland and emerge at overlooks where you can watch lobster boats work the waters below. Birdwatching is excellent here — ospreys, bald eagles, and seabirds are regular visitors. Fishing from the shoreline or by boat adds another draw.

Camping on Warren Island is the main event. A handful of lean-to shelters and tent sites sit among the trees near the water’s edge, offering a true backcountry feel without a grueling approach. Each site is well-spaced for privacy. Picnic tables, fire rings, and pit toilets are provided, but pack in everything else — there’s no potable water or supply store.

The best time to visit is late June through September, when bay waters are calmest for the crossing. Plan your trip around tides and weather, and arrive early in the season to secure a site on busy summer weekends.
