Fort Popham State Historic Site
Standing guard at the mouth of the Kennebec River where it meets the Atlantic, Fort Popham is a striking semicircular granite fortification that never saw battle but tells a compelling story of Civil War-era coastal defense. The massive unfinished walls — some rising 30 feet high — create a dramatic backdrop against crashing waves, making this one of Maine’s most photogenic historic sites packed into just 4 acres.
Walk through the arched casemates and climb the spiral granite staircases to the upper ramparts, where panoramic views stretch across the river to Georgetown Island and out to the open ocean. History buffs will appreciate that this site sits near where the Popham Colony — one of England’s first attempts at New World settlement — landed in 1607, predating Plymouth by 13 years.
Beyond exploring the fort itself, visitors come for the tidal pools along the rocky shoreline, excellent bird watching during migration seasons, and some of the best picnicking spots on the Midcoast. Fishermen cast from the rocks for striped bass and bluefish, particularly productive from June through September. The adjacent Popham Beach State Park offers swimming and extended hiking if you want a full day.
Visit between late May and mid-October for the best experience — summer weekends draw crowds, so weekday mornings reward you with near-solitude inside the fort’s echoing chambers. There’s no camping on-site, but nearby Hermit Island and Meadowbrook offer solid options within a short drive. No entrance fee is charged, making this an easy and worthwhile stop along the Midcoast.
