Dead River
Maine (Somerset County)
Dead River stretches across more than 7,000 acres of rugged Somerset County wilderness in western Maine, offering one of the state’s most untamed outdoor experiences. Despite its name, this state park pulses with life — dense boreal forests, cold-water streams, and sweeping views of the surrounding mountains make it a destination for those who prefer their nature unpolished.
The Dead River itself is legendary among whitewater enthusiasts. Spring releases from Flagstaff Lake send powerful flows through a dramatic gorge, drawing paddlers from across New England for some of the best Class III–IV rapids in the Northeast. Even outside peak whitewater season, the river corridor rewards visitors with excellent trout fishing, particularly for native brook trout in the cooler tributary streams.
On land, the park’s trail network winds through mixed hardwood and spruce-fir forests where moose sightings are common, especially at dawn and dusk near boggy clearings. Hunters know the area well during fall seasons, and snowmobilers crisscross the property once winter sets in, connecting to Maine’s extensive trail system.
The best window for visiting depends on what draws you. Late May through June brings the best water levels for paddling. Summer offers warm days for hiking and fishing with fewer crowds than coastal Maine. Fall foliage in Somerset County peaks in late September and rivals anything in New England.
Come prepared for variable weather, limited cell service, and the kind of quiet that only deep Maine woods can deliver. This is backcountry territory — pack accordingly and leave no trace.
