Kennebec Highlands

Tucked into the rolling terrain of Franklin in Kennebec County, Kennebec Highlands spans over 6,000 acres of conserved Maine woodland — one of the largest public land holdings in the central part of the state. This isn’t a manicured state park with paved paths and visitor centers. It’s a rugged, quiet expanse of forested ridges, pristine ponds, and rocky summits that rewards those willing to lace up their boots and explore.

The trail network here winds through mixed hardwood and softwood forests, climbing to open ledges with sweeping views of the surrounding lakes region. Vienna Mountain and McGaffey Mountain are the standout hikes, each offering panoramic vistas that stretch across a landscape dotted with ponds and unbroken forest canopy. In autumn, the views are extraordinary — a sea of red, orange, and gold rolling toward the horizon.

Birding is productive in the varied habitats, and the network of old logging roads makes for excellent mountain biking and cross-country skiing when conditions allow. Anglers will find brook trout in the backcountry ponds, accessible by trail. Hunting is permitted in season.

Fall foliage season (late September through mid-October) draws the most visitors, but summer offers warm-weather hiking with far fewer crowds. Winter transforms the highlands into a quiet snowshoe destination. Spring can be muddy — plan accordingly.

There are no developed campgrounds or facilities on-site, so come prepared with water, maps, and layers. Cell service is unreliable. That’s part of the appeal.
