The St. John Valley Cultural Byway and Fish River Scenic Byway together trace a route through Maine‘s northernmost reaches, where Acadian French heritage and the St. John River define a cultural landscape unlike anywhere else in the United States. The combined route follows the river valley through small towns where French is still spoken at home and Acadian traditions continue in daily life.

The St. John Valley portion runs along US Route 1 from Madawaska to Van Buren, passing through Fort Kent, where the Acadian Archives at the University of Maine branch campus preserves centuries of Franco-American history. The Fish River Scenic Byway branches inland along the Fish River chain of lakes, connecting a string of small communities surrounded by commercial timberland and pristine waterways.

This region offers exceptional outdoor recreation. The Fish River chain provides outstanding landlocked salmon and brook trout fishing, while the surrounding North Maine Woods deliver some of the most remote backcountry experiences east of the Mississippi. In winter, the area transforms into a snowmobile destination with hundreds of miles of groomed trails connecting to the statewide ITS network.

The Acadian Festival in Madawaska, held annually in late June, celebrates the region’s French heritage with traditional music, ployes (buckwheat crepes), and community gatherings. Fall foliage typically peaks in late September, earlier than much of New England. Visitors should plan for limited services between towns and bring supplies for remote stretches of the route.
