Fort Halifax State Historic Site
Maine (Kennebec County)
Standing at the confluence of the Sebasticook and Kennebec Rivers in Winslow, Fort Halifax State Historic Site preserves one of the most significant colonial-era structures in America. The site’s centerpiece is a 1754 blockhouse — the oldest surviving blockhouse in the United States — built during the French and Indian War as the northernmost outpost in a chain of British forts protecting settlements along the Kennebec River.
At just three-quarters of an acre, this is an intimate historic site rather than a sprawling park, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in significance. The blockhouse was painstakingly reconstructed after the devastating floods of 1987 washed it downstream, with roughly 70% of the original hand-hewn timbers recovered and reassembled. Interpretive panels walk visitors through the fort’s military history and the broader story of colonial expansion into Maine’s interior.
The riverside setting makes this more than a quick history stop. The grassy grounds along the Kennebec are ideal for a picnic, and the riverbank offers pleasant walking and birdwatching. Anglers will find the confluence area productive for smallmouth bass and the occasional Atlantic salmon during migration season.
There is no camping on-site given the small footprint. For overnight stays, nearby options along the Kennebec corridor are plentiful.
Visit between late May and October for the best experience — the grounds are most accessible and the foliage along the river peaks in early October. Plan for a 30- to 45-minute visit, and pair it with a trip to nearby Fort Western in Augusta for a full day of Kennebec Valley history.
