Perched high on the slopes of Haleakalā at nearly 6,200 feet, Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area offers one of Maui’s most unexpected landscapes — a misty, cool forest that feels more like the Pacific Northwest than tropical Hawaii. Towering redwoods, cypress, cedar, and eucalyptus trees planted during the 1920s-30s Civilian Conservation Corps era create a dense canopy unlike anything else in the state.

The recreation area anchors a network of interconnected trails within the Kula and Kahikinui Forest Reserves. The Redwood Trail winds through groves of California redwoods, while the Plum Trail passes through native and introduced forest with seasonal wild plums. The Polipoli Trail, Haleakalā Ridge Trail, and Boundary Trail offer longer routes with sweeping views of Maui’s central valley, the West Maui Mountains, and neighboring islands on clear days. Mountain biking is permitted on select trails, and birdwatchers may spot native species in the surrounding forest.

A small, rustic campground sits within the recreation area, offering a handful of tent sites in a serene, shaded setting. Temperatures regularly dip into the 40s at night, so warm layers and rain gear are essential — a sharp contrast to the beaches below. A single cabin is available through advance reservation.

The best time to visit is during drier summer months, though morning fog and afternoon clouds are common year-round. Note that the final stretch of access road is unpaved and can be rough — a 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended. Polipoli rewards those willing to make the climb with solitude and scenery found nowhere else on Maui.
