Fenwick Island State Park

Tucked along Delaware’s southeastern coastline in Sussex County, Fenwick Island State Park stretches across 375 acres of pristine barrier island landscape between the Atlantic Ocean and Little Assawoman Bay. This slender strip of undeveloped coast offers something increasingly rare along the mid-Atlantic seaboard — a quiet, natural beach experience without the boardwalk crowds just miles away in Ocean City or Rehoboth.

The park’s dual shoreline is its defining feature. The oceanside delivers classic Atlantic beach days with swimming, surfing, and surf fishing along wide sandy stretches. Flip to the bayside, and you’ll find calmer waters ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and windsurfing, plus some of the best crabbing in Sussex County. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars — the coastal dunes and salt marshes attract shorebirds, ospreys, and migrating species throughout the year.

The undeveloped dune systems here are ecologically significant, home to native beach grasses and seasonal nesting areas for horseshoe crabs. A short nature trail winds through the maritime habitat, offering an easy walk for families between beach sessions.

Summer is peak season, with warm water and full lifeguard coverage from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Late September and October bring fewer crowds, mild weather, and excellent fishing conditions. Spring migration makes April and May rewarding for wildlife observation.

No bathhouse or concession facilities exist within the park itself, so pack accordingly. Nearby Fenwick Island town provides restaurants and supplies within a short drive. Parking fills early on summer weekends — arrive before 10 AM to secure a spot.
