Ogden River Scenic Byway

Utah

Follow the Ogden River eastward into the heart of the Wasatch Mountains on this stunning Utah scenic byway. The route traces the river through narrow Ogden Canyon, where towering limestone walls rise dramatically on both sides and the water rushes alongside the road in a constant, mesmerizing companion.

Emerging from the canyon, you’ll arrive at Pineview Reservoir, a sparkling mountain lake surrounded by forested peaks that offers boating, swimming, and picnicking in warmer months. Beyond the reservoir, the byway continues through the charming mountain communities of Eden and Huntsville, where local eateries and the historic Shooting Star Saloon — one of Utah’s oldest bars — invite a leisurely stop.

The drive showcases a remarkable range of scenery in a compact distance: dramatic rock formations, riverside cottonwoods that blaze gold in autumn, dense evergreen forests, and sweeping mountain vistas. Wildlife sightings are common, with deer, hawks, and occasional moose appearing along the corridor.

Fall is the prime season, when the canyon erupts in color, though summer brings warm reservoir days and winter transforms the surrounding peaks into a snow-draped wonderland near Snowbasin Resort. Allow one to two hours to enjoy the full route with stops along the way.
