Smith Shoal Light marks a dangerous shallow reef northwest of Key West, Florida. Built in 1933, this skeletal steel tower replaced earlier lightship stations that warned mariners away from the treacherous shoal. Its open-framework design was engineered to withstand hurricane-force winds — a constant threat in the Lower Keys.

The light remains active as a navigational aid but is not open to the public. Visitors can view it by boat, with charter trips departing from Key West Harbor. Late afternoon offers the best photography light, with warm tones against open water.
