Rising from the shallow waters near the Saddlebunch Keys in the Lower Florida Keys, American Shoal Light has stood sentinel since 1880. This iron screw-pile lighthouse was one of the last reef lights built along Florida’s treacherous coral reefs, designed to warn mariners away from dangerous shoals in the Straits of Florida.

The lighthouse is no longer active and is not open to the public — visitors cannot climb the tower. However, it remains a striking sight from the water, making it a popular destination for boaters, kayakers, and photographers. Early morning and late afternoon light offer the best conditions for photography.
