Miah Maull Shoal Light

Miah Maull Shoal Light

Delaware Bay · New Jersey

Rising from the waters of Delaware Bay off Downe Township, New Jersey, Miah Maull Shoal Light has guided mariners since 1913. This caisson-style lighthouse was built to mark the dangerous Miah Maull Shoal, replacing earlier lightship stations that struggled against the bay’s harsh conditions. Its sturdy concrete foundation and cast-iron superstructure make it a striking example of early 20th-century offshore engineering.

The light remains active as a navigational aid but is not open to the public. The best photography opportunities come during golden hour from the shoreline or by boat. Nearby, visitors can explore the Bayshore Heritage Byway, the charming town of Fortescue, and the exceptional birding areas of the Delaware Bay coast.
