The Silver Island Mountains Backcountry Byway traces a 54-mile loop through Utah‘s stark Great Basin desert, circling an isolated mountain range rising from the ancient Bonneville Salt Flats. This BLM-managed route follows the historic Hastings Cutoff of the California National Historic Trail, the ill-fated shortcut taken by the Donner-Reed party in 1846.
Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the byway corridor, with no developed campgrounds or facilities available. Visitors should arrive fully self-sufficient with water, fuel, and supplies. The rugged gravel road rewards mountain bikers and overlanders with sweeping views of white salt flats, desert valleys, and weathered peaks. Wildlife viewing opportunities include pronghorn, raptors, and desert bighorn sheep. The dramatic landscape draws photographers, particularly during golden hour when the mountains glow against the flat expanse.
Access begins near Wendover along Interstate 80. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, especially after rain when sections become impassable. Spring and fall offer ideal conditions—summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F, and winter brings occasional snow. No water sources exist along the route.
