Angel Lake Road Scenic Byway

Rising from the high desert floor of northeastern Nevada, Angel Lake Road climbs 18.8 miles through a dramatic transformation of landscape that few short drives can match. Beginning near Wells, the route ascends the rugged East Humboldt Range, trading sagebrush flats for alpine meadows, granite cirques, and stands of quaking aspen that blaze gold each autumn.

The crown jewel is Angel Lake itself — a glacially carved gem nestled at over 8,000 feet, ringed by towering peaks and wildflower-studded slopes. The lake offers excellent trout fishing, a developed campground, and hiking trails that push deeper into the wilderness. Along the ascent, pull off to take in sweeping views of the Great Basin stretching endlessly to the west, with the Ruby Mountains visible on clear days.

Wildlife watchers may spot mule deer, mountain goats, and raptors riding thermals above the cliffs. The byway is typically open from late June through October, with July and August offering the warmest conditions and peak wildflower displays. Allow one to two hours for the drive itself, plus extra time for hiking, fishing, or simply sitting lakeside in one of Nevada’s most unexpected alpine settings.
