City of Rocks National Reserve
Rising from the high desert of Cassia County, Idaho, City of Rocks National Reserve protects 14,407 acres of granite spires, pinnacles, and sculpted formations that have drawn travelers since California-bound emigrants passed through in the 1840s. The towering rock formations — some reaching 60 stories high and dating back 2.5 billion years — create a landscape that genuinely looks like a city of stone, with “streets” winding between massive monoliths still bearing pioneer inscriptions from the Oregon and California Trails.
City of Rocks is one of the premier rock climbing destinations in the western United States, with over 700 routes ranging from beginner-friendly slabs to challenging overhangs on world-class granite. Beyond climbing, the reserve offers excellent hiking through pinyon-juniper woodlands, mountain biking on scenic trails, and outstanding bird watching — raptors and songbirds thrive among the formations. The night skies here are remarkably dark, making stargazing a standout experience.
Spring and fall deliver the best conditions, with mild temperatures ideal for climbing and hiking. Summers bring warm days but cool evenings at the reserve’s 5,000–7,000-foot elevation. Winter access is limited but possible for snowshoeing.
Visitors should expect a remote, rugged setting with limited services — bring water, food, and supplies. The nearest town, Almo, is small. Cell service is unreliable. That remoteness is part of the appeal: City of Rocks rewards those willing to venture off the beaten path with landscapes found nowhere else in Idaho.
