South Fork State Recreation Area

Tucked into the high desert of Elko County, South Fork State Recreation Area sprawls across 3,903 acres of rugged northeastern Nevada landscape centered around the South Fork Reservoir. This is real Great Basin country — wide-open sagebrush flats rising into juniper-dotted hills, with the Ruby Mountains visible on the horizon.

The reservoir is the main draw, offering some of the best warm-water fishing in Nevada. Anglers come for largemouth and smallmouth bass, along with brown and rainbow trout that thrive in the cooler tributaries feeding the lake. Spring and early summer are prime fishing season, when bass move into the shallows and trout are active. Boating is popular too — a concrete launch ramp provides easy access, and the reservoir’s size accommodates everything from kayaks to motorboats.

Beyond the water, the surrounding terrain is excellent for hiking, wildlife watching, and horseback riding. Mule deer, pronghorn, and raptors are common sights, especially during early morning hours along the canyon rim trails.

Camping options include developed sites with amenities near the reservoir’s edge, making it easy to roll out of your tent and cast a line before breakfast. The campground stays relatively uncrowded compared to Nevada’s more heavily trafficked parks, which is part of its charm.

Visit between May and October for the best conditions. Summer days are warm and dry, but evenings cool down fast at this elevation — bring layers. Winter brings ice fishing opportunities for the adventurous, though access can be limited by snow.
