Wawatam Lighthouse

Standing on the shores of Emmet County, Michigan, the Wawatam Lighthouse was built in 2006, making it one of the state’s newest lighthouses. Despite its modern construction, it pays tribute to the region’s rich maritime heritage along the Straits of Mackinac. The lighthouse remains an active navigational aid but is not open to the public — visitors cannot climb the tower. It’s best photographed during golden hour, when warm light reflects off the surrounding water, or in winter when ice formations frame the structure dramatically. Nearby, travelers can explore Mackinaw City, the historic Colonial Michilimackinac fort, and catch a ferry to Mackinac Island, one of Michigan’s most beloved destinations.
