Holland Harbor Light

Known affectionately as “Big Red,” Holland Harbor Light has guided vessels into Holland Harbor since 1872. The striking steel-framed lighthouse, painted its iconic bright red, stands at the end of the south pier on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore. Originally a square wooden structure, it was rebuilt in 1907 and later enclosed in its distinctive steel shell. Still an active navigational aid operated by the U.S. Coast Guard, the lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing. The best photography conditions come during golden hour, when the red tower glows against Lake Michigan sunsets. Nearby, visitors can explore Holland State Park’s sandy beaches, stroll the pier, or discover Dutch heritage attractions in downtown Holland.
