Kal-Haven Trail
Michigan (Kalamazoo, Van Buren County)
Kal-Haven Trail stretches 34 miles between Kalamazoo and South Haven, cutting through the gentle farmland and wooded corridors of Van Buren County. Built on a former railroad bed, the crushed limestone path offers a nearly flat route that welcomes cyclists, hikers, and cross-country skiers alike — making it one of southwestern Michigan’s most accessible long-distance trails.
The trail passes through a handful of small towns including Gobles, Bloomingdale, and Grand Junction, where you can refuel at local cafes or fill water bottles before pressing on. One of the route’s highlights is the covered bridge near Kendall, a picturesque wooden span that draws photographers year-round. The western terminus drops you just minutes from South Haven’s Lake Michigan beaches, giving end-to-end riders a satisfying reward.
Spring and fall are ideal for cycling, when temperatures are mild and the canopy transforms with wildflowers or autumn color. Summer brings more foot traffic but also the appeal of finishing at the lakeshore. Winter opens the trail to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow.
A state trail permit is required for cyclists — available at trailhead kiosks or online through the Michigan DNR. The path is well-marked with mile posts and has multiple parking areas along the route, so you can tackle shorter segments if the full 34 miles feels ambitious.
Kal-Haven Trail rewards those who appreciate quiet landscapes, small-town character, and the simple pleasure of moving through open country at your own pace.
