Tucked into the rugged highlands of Potter County, Valhalla State Forest lives up to its mythic name. This remote stretch of Pennsylvania’s northern tier feels like a world apart — dense hardwood canopy, rocky ridgelines, and silence deep enough to notice. It’s one of the least-visited corners of the state forest system, which is exactly the point.

The forest sits within the broader Susquehannock State Forest complex, where elk sightings are increasingly common and the night sky stays genuinely dark. Hikers will find access to sections of the Susquehannock Trail System, a 85-mile loop that ranks among Pennsylvania’s most challenging and rewarding long-distance trails. The terrain is hilly and unforgiving in places — bring trekking poles and real boots.

Hunting is a major draw here, particularly during fall turkey and deer seasons, when Potter County’s reputation as “God’s Country” earns its keep. Spring and summer bring excellent birding, wild trout streams, and mountain laurel blooms that light up the understory in June. Fall foliage peaks in mid-October and is spectacular from the ridgetops.

Dispersed primitive camping is permitted throughout Pennsylvania state forests, so you can set up camp along trails or forest roads without a reservation. There are no developed campgrounds with hookups — this is backcountry territory. Pack in your water and pack out your trash.

Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowmobiling on designated trails, though access roads can become impassable after heavy snow. Come prepared for real weather and real solitude.
