Leonard Harrison State Park
Perched on the eastern rim of Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon, Leonard Harrison State Park delivers one of the most dramatic overlooks in the northeastern United States. The 585-acre park in Tioga County sits directly across Pine Creek Gorge from its sister park, Colton Point, offering sweeping views of a 1,000-foot-deep canyon carved over millions of years by Pine Creek.
Established in 1922, the park serves as the more accessible of the two canyon-rim parks, with a well-maintained overlook just steps from the parking area. The Turkey Path Trail descends roughly 1 mile to the floor of the gorge, dropping over 800 feet through old-growth hemlocks and past a series of cascading waterfalls before reaching Pine Creek itself. It’s a rewarding but strenuous hike — the return climb will remind you of every foot of elevation you gained on the way down.
Beyond the signature trail, visitors can explore additional hiking paths through mixed hardwood forests, enjoy picnic pavilions near the rim, and visit the environmental interpretive center to learn about the gorge’s geology and wildlife. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for bald eagles and hawks riding thermals along the canyon walls.
Fall foliage season, typically mid-October, transforms the gorge into a tapestry of orange, gold, and crimson — it’s the park’s most popular time and for good reason. Spring and early summer bring the waterfalls to their fullest. Arrive early on weekends, as the overlook parking area fills quickly during peak season.
