Colton Point State Park
Pennsylvania (Tioga County County)
Colton Point State Park perches on the western rim of Pine Creek Gorge, Pennsylvania’s “Grand Canyon” — a 47-mile-long, 1,000-foot-deep chasm that ranks among the most dramatic landscapes in the eastern United States. Established in 1936 across 368 acres in Tioga County, this compact park delivers outsized views that rival destinations ten times its size.
The star attraction is the series of overlooks along the canyon rim, where visitors gaze across to Leonard Harrison State Park on the opposite wall. The Colton Point overlook alone is worth the drive — a sweeping panorama of forested slopes plunging toward Pine Creek far below. For those who want more than the view, the Turkey Path Trail descends roughly 1,000 feet to the canyon floor, where Pine Creek offers excellent trout fishing and a chance to walk the 62-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail.
The park’s small campground provides a rustic base camp with tent and trailer sites nestled among hardwoods. Facilities are basic — this is a place that lets the scenery do the talking.
Fall is the prime season here. Mid-October transforms the gorge into a canyon of fire as maples, oaks, and birches ignite in orange and crimson. Spring brings wildflowers and roaring waterfalls fed by snowmelt. Summer offers cool mornings and reliable shade under the forest canopy.
Come prepared for elevation — temperatures run cooler than the surrounding valleys, and fog can settle into the gorge without warning. Sturdy footwear is essential if you plan to tackle the Turkey Path descent.
