Beltzville State Park
Pennsylvania (Carbon County County)
Beltzville State Park
Nestled in the Pohono Mountains of Carbon County, Beltzville State Park spans nearly 3,000 acres of wooded ridges and open water centered around the 949-acre Beltzville Lake. Established in 1972 after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dammed Pohopoco Creek, the park has become one of northeastern Pennsylvania’s most popular year-round destinations.
The lake is the main draw. A 525-foot sand beach opens for swimming from late May through mid-September, and the calm, expansive water is ideal for motorboating, sailing, kayaking, and fishing. Anglers target walleye, muskellunge, and largemouth bass — the walleye fishing here is particularly well-regarded among locals. In winter, the lake freezes solid enough for ice fishing and ice boating when conditions allow.
On land, over 15 miles of trails wind through hardwood forests and along the shoreline. The Falls Trail leads to a modest but photogenic waterfall on Wild Creek, making it one of the park’s most rewarding short hikes. Mountain biking and cross-country skiing share many of the same paths depending on the season. Hunting is permitted on designated acreage during Pennsylvania’s regular seasons.
The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when the beach is open and the surrounding forests are lush. Autumn brings spectacular foliage across the ridgelines. Note that camping availability should be confirmed directly with the park office before planning an overnight trip.
Beltzville sits just minutes from the Pocono region, making it an easy addition to any northeastern Pennsylvania itinerary.
