Hickory Run State Park
Pennsylvania (Carbon County County)
Hickory Run State Park sprawls across 15,550 acres in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, offering one of the most diverse outdoor experiences in the Pocono Mountains region. Established in 1945, the park is best known for its Boulder Field — a National Natural Landmark where a massive expanse of boulders stretches across 16 acres, left behind by glacial activity during the last ice age. It’s one of the most striking geological features in the eastern United States and worth the easy 1.5-mile walk to reach it.
Beyond the Boulder Field, Hickory Run delivers with over 40 miles of hiking trails winding through dense forests of oak, hemlock, and rhododendron. Hawk Falls, a short and family-friendly hike, rewards visitors with a beautiful 25-foot waterfall tucked into a rocky gorge. The park’s three lakes — Sand Spring, Hickory Run, and Mud Run — provide swimming and fishing opportunities, while hunters find excellent grounds during season.
The park operates several campground areas with nearly 400 sites, ranging from tent-only to sites with electric hookups. Reservations are recommended for summer weekends, when the campgrounds fill quickly.
Visit from late May through October for the best conditions. Fall foliage season in early-to-mid October transforms the park into a spectacular display of color across the Pocono plateau. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the trail network.
Hickory Run sits conveniently near the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 80, making it an accessible weekend escape from Philadelphia, New York, and northern New Jersey.
