Nescopeck State Park
Pennsylvania (Luzerne County County)
Nescopeck State Park sits on 3,550 acres of rolling Appalachian terrain in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, where the Nescopeck Creek winds through dense hardwood forests and open wetlands. Established in 2005, it’s one of Pennsylvania’s newer state parks — and one of its most quietly rewarding.
What sets Nescopeck apart is its emphasis on ecological diversity. The park protects several distinct habitats, including old-growth hemlock groves, expansive peat bogs, and one of the largest wetland complexes in northeastern Pennsylvania. Birdwatchers will find the marshy lowlands especially productive, with sightings of great blue herons, wood ducks, and migrating warblers common in spring and fall.
Hiking trails thread through the park’s varied landscape, ranging from easy boardwalk loops over the wetlands to more rugged woodland paths that climb through oak and maple forests. Mountain biking and horseback riding are permitted on designated trails, and fishing along Nescopeck Creek draws anglers after native brook trout and stocked brown trout.
Hunting is permitted in season across much of the park, making it a popular destination for whitetail deer and wild turkey during fall. Winter visitors can explore the trails on cross-country skis or snowshoes when conditions allow.
The best time to visit is mid-May through October, when the trails are dry and the wetlands are teeming with wildlife. Spring wildflower displays are exceptional here. Pack layers — the elevation and creek-fed air keep mornings cool even in summer. Nescopeck rewards those willing to slow down and look closely.
