Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center
Pennsylvania (Northampton County County)
Nestled in the rolling hills of Northampton County, Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center spans 1,168 acres of protected woodland, meadows, and stream valleys that have served as a natural classroom since 1959. What sets Jacobsburg apart from typical state parks is its deep commitment to environmental education — this isn’t just a place to visit nature, it’s a place to understand it.
The park’s centerpiece is Bushkill Creek, a high-quality cold-water stream that draws fly fishers from across the region. Miles of trails wind through mature hardwood forests and open fields, offering excellent hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing depending on the season. Birdwatchers will find the diverse habitats particularly rewarding, with warblers filling the canopy in spring and raptors riding thermals along the ridgelines in fall.
History buffs should seek out the Henry Homestead area, which preserves the legacy of the Henry family’s renowned rifle-making operation — a significant chapter in American firearms history. The park’s environmental education center hosts programs year-round, making it an outstanding destination for families with curious kids.
Camping information isn’t currently confirmed, so contact the park office directly if you’re planning an overnight stay. For day visits, late April through early June brings wildflower displays and migrating songbirds, while October delivers some of the Lehigh Valley’s finest fall foliage.
Expect a quieter, more contemplative experience here than at Pennsylvania’s busier state parks. Jacobsburg rewards visitors who slow down and pay attention to the details of the natural world around them.
