Tuscarora State Park

Tucked into the folded ridges of Schuylkill County, Tuscarora State Park spreads across 1,618 acres of Appalachian woodland centered around Tuscarora Lake — a 96-acre reservoir that anchors nearly everything worth doing here. Established in 1971, the park sits in Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal region, where second-growth forest has quietly reclaimed land once stripped for mining, making the landscape itself a story of recovery.

The lake is the main draw. In summer, a guarded sand beach offers swimming, and the calm water is ideal for non-powered boating — canoes, kayaks, and rowboats glide easily across its surface, with rental boats available on-site. Anglers cast for bass, perch, and panfish from the shoreline or small boats, with stocked trout in the feeder streams adding spring excitement.

On land, roughly 15 miles of trails wind through oak and hickory forest, ranging from easy lakeside loops to moderate ridge climbs with views over the surrounding valleys. In winter, these same trails become cross-country skiing and snowshoeing routes, and the park grooms paths when conditions allow. Ice fishing draws a loyal crowd once the lake freezes solid.

Picnic pavilions and open areas dot the lakeshore, making it a strong choice for family day trips. Camping information should be confirmed directly with the park office, as availability varies by season.

The best window to visit is late May through mid-October, when the lake facilities are fully open and the surrounding forest transitions from spring green to blazing autumn color. Come midweek if you want the beach to yourself.
