W. B. Nelson State Recreation Site
Tucked along Oregon’s central coast near the small town of Yachats, W. B. Nelson State Recreation Site offers a quiet stretch of rugged shoreline that feels worlds away from the more crowded coastal parks. This compact day-use area sits where basalt meets the Pacific, giving visitors front-row access to one of the most dramatic landscapes on the Oregon Coast.
The real draw here is the rocky intertidal zone. At low tide, the dark volcanic shelves reveal tidepools teeming with sea anemones, purple sea urchins, and hermit crabs — making it an excellent stop for families and anyone curious about marine life. Bring a tide chart and time your visit for a minus tide for the best exploring. The shoreline also rewards photographers, especially during winter storm-watching season when waves crash spectacularly against the jagged rock formations.
There’s no camping on-site, but the nearby Cape Perpetua area and several state park campgrounds along Highway 101 provide plenty of overnight options within a short drive. The site itself is best suited for a focused stop — pack a picnic, explore the shore, and take in the views.
Visit between June and September for calmer weather and reliable tidepool access, or come during fall and winter if you prefer dramatic skies and powerful surf. Either way, dress in layers — the central coast has a mind of its own when it comes to weather. Dogs are welcome but should be leashed near the tidepools.
