Smelt Sands State Recreation Site
Oregon (Central Coast County)
Smelt Sands State Recreation Site sits at the edge of Yachats, a quiet village on Oregon’s central coast where the Yachats River meets the Pacific. This compact recreation site punches well above its size, offering one of the coast’s most accessible and dramatic shoreline experiences.
The main draw is the 804 Trail, a paved path that follows the rocky coastline north from Smelt Sands toward Yachats Ocean Road State Natural Site. The trail hugs basalt shelves and bluffs carved by centuries of wave action, delivering unobstructed ocean views the entire way. At high tide, waves crash against the rocks just feet from the path — it’s some of the most dramatic wave watching on the Oregon coast without any scrambling required.
Low tide transforms the shoreline into a network of tidepools teeming with sea stars, anemones, and hermit crabs. Bring waterproof shoes and take your time exploring the basalt formations. The site was historically a gathering spot for smelt fishing, which gave the area its name, though the runs are far less common today.
There’s no camping at Smelt Sands itself, but Beachside State Recreation Site and Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park are both within a short drive and offer full campground facilities.
Visit between March and May for migrating gray whales, or come in winter for the most powerful storm watching. Summer brings calmer seas and warmer weather, though fog is common in the mornings. Year-round, dress in layers — the central coast earns its reputation for changeable weather.
