McVay Rock State Recreation Site
Oregon (South Coast County)
I don’t have web search access right now, but I do know about McVay Rock State Recreation Site from my training data. Let me write the description based on what I know.
McVay Rock State Recreation Site
Perched along Oregon’s wild southern coastline near Brookings, McVay Rock State Recreation Site offers one of the most dramatic ocean viewpoints on the entire South Coast. This compact day-use area sits on a bluff overlooking a rugged stretch of shoreline where sea stacks, offshore rocks, and crashing surf create a scene that feels almost primordial.
The star attraction is McVay Rock itself — a massive offshore formation that draws seabirds and the occasional hauled-out seal. From the bluff, you’ll have sweeping views north and south along the coastline, making this an excellent spot for whale watching during the gray whale migration (mid-December through January, then again in March through June). Bring binoculars — you won’t regret it.
A short trail leads down to a secluded, rocky beach that feels wonderfully remote even though Highway 101 is just steps away. Tidepooling is rewarding at low tide, with anemones, sea stars, and hermit crabs tucked into the basalt shelves. Beachcombing, photography, and simply sitting with the sound of the Pacific are the main draws here.
There is no camping at McVay Rock, but nearby Harris Beach State Park offers full-service campsites just a few miles north. No fees or reservations are needed for a visit.
The best time to come is late spring through early fall for calmer weather, though winter storms bring their own raw beauty. Dress in layers — the southern Oregon coast earns its reputation for sudden weather shifts. This is a place to slow down and let the coastline do the talking.
