Darlingtonia State Natural Site
Oregon (Central Coast County)
Darlingtonia State Natural Site protects one of Oregon’s most unusual botanical treasures: a thriving bog filled with cobra lilies (Darlingtonia californica), rare carnivorous pitcher plants found only along the Pacific Coast. Tucked along the Central Coast near Florence, this compact natural site offers something you won’t find in any other Oregon park — a boardwalk winding through a wetland where insect-eating plants twist upward like hooded serpents, their translucent hoods glowing green in filtered sunlight.
The cobra lily lures insects with nectar and false exits, trapping them inside its tubular leaves. Interpretive signs along the short boardwalk trail explain the plant’s fascinating biology and the cold-water bog ecosystem that sustains it. The loop trail takes roughly 15–20 minutes, making this an easy and rewarding stop between Florence and Yachats on Highway 101.
Peak blooming season runs from late May through July, when the plants produce striking yellow-green flowers on tall stalks — the best window for photography and the fullest display. The bog stays lush through early fall, though flowers fade by August.
There is no camping on-site, but Honeyman State Park and Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial campgrounds sit just minutes south with full hookups and dune access. No entry fee is required.
Come for the sheer strangeness of standing among thousands of carnivorous plants in a quiet coastal forest. It’s one of Oregon’s smallest state natural sites and one of its most memorable — a genuine curiosity worth pulling off the highway for.
