Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint
Oregon (Central Coast County)
Perched on a dramatic 205-foot headland along Oregon’s central coast, Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint offers one of the most photographed scenes on the entire Pacific coastline. The lighthouse itself, first lit in 1894, still operates as an active navigational aid — its beam visible 21 miles out to sea, making it the strongest light on the Oregon coast.
A half-mile trail winds from the parking area down to the lighthouse and the restored keeper’s cottage, now operated as a bed-and-breakfast. The path cuts through a Sitka spruce forest thick with ferns and salal before opening to sweeping views of rocky coves and the open Pacific. During winter and spring, the headland doubles as a prime whale-watching spot as gray whales migrate along the coast.
The viewpoint itself doesn’t offer camping, but Devil’s Elbow State Park sits just below at the base of the headland with beach access and picnic areas. Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park, less than two miles north, provides full campground facilities including tent and RV sites tucked into old-growth coastal forest.
Visit between March and May for whale migration and wildflowers, or come in September and October for the clearest skies and thinnest crowds. Summer brings reliable weather but heavier traffic on Highway 101. Whenever you arrive, allow at least an hour — the combination of historic architecture, coastal forest, and raw Pacific views makes this a stop worth lingering over.
