Crissey Field State Recreation Site
Tucked into Oregon’s far southwestern corner where the Winchuck River meets the Pacific Ocean, Crissey Field State Recreation Site offers one of the South Coast’s most underrated coastal experiences. Sitting just north of the California border near Brookings, this day-use area rewards visitors with a striking convergence of river, wetland, and ocean landscapes packed into a single stop.
The park’s network of paved and gravel trails winds through restored coastal wetland habitat, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching — shorebirds, osprey, and great blue herons are common sightings along the river corridor. A short walk brings you to a broad, driftwood-strewn beach where tidepooling, beachcombing, and whale watching (December through June) keep visitors occupied for hours. The Winchuck River estuary is also popular with anglers targeting salmon and steelhead during seasonal runs.
An interpretive welcome center near the parking area provides regional information and restrooms, making Crissey Field a natural first-or-last stop for travelers crossing the Oregon-California border on Highway 101. Covered picnic shelters offer comfortable spots for lunch with ocean views even on drizzly days.
No camping is available on-site, but Harris Beach State Park — with full hookup and tent sites — sits just five miles north. The best time to visit is late spring through early fall for mild weather, though winter storms bring dramatic wave action and uncrowded beaches. Dogs are welcome on leash.
