Cape Blanco State Park
Oregon (South Coast County)
Cape Blanco State Park sits on the westernmost point in Oregon, where rugged coastal cliffs drop dramatically into the Pacific. The park occupies a windswept headland on the southern Oregon coast near Port Orford, offering some of the most raw, untamed coastal scenery in the state.
The centerpiece is the Cape Blanco Lighthouse, built in 1870 and the oldest standing lighthouse on the Oregon coast. It’s open for tours from April through October, and the walk out to the lighthouse rewards visitors with sweeping views of the coastline in both directions. Below the cape, a trail descends to a wide, driftwood-strewn beach that feels genuinely remote — you can walk for miles and rarely see another person.
The park offers year-round camping with electrical hookups, horse camps, and a few cabins. Sites sit in a grove of wind-shaped Sitka spruce that provides welcome shelter from the coastal gusts. Reservations are a good idea for summer weekends but the campground rarely fills completely, making it a solid backup when more popular coastal parks are booked.
Hiking trails wind through coastal meadows and old-growth forest. The Sixes River runs along the park’s edge, drawing steelhead anglers in winter. Horseback riding is permitted on designated trails and the beach.
The best time to visit is late spring through early fall for drier weather and lighthouse access. Even in summer, pack layers — the cape earns its reputation as one of the windiest spots on the Oregon coast.
