East Harbor State Park

Tucked along the southern shore of Lake Erie in Ottawa County, East Harbor State Park spreads across 1,831 acres of marshland, sandy beaches, and wooded uplands — one of Ohio’s finest lakefront escapes. The park sits on the Marblehead Peninsula, placing visitors within easy reach of the Lake Erie Islands, Kelleys Island, and the charming village of Marblehead itself.

The beach is the main draw. A long, sandy stretch along Lake Erie offers swimming, sunbathing, and some of the best sunset views in northern Ohio. Beyond the shoreline, the park’s extensive wetlands attract birders year-round, with migrating warblers and shorebirds passing through in impressive numbers during spring and fall. Kayaking and canoeing through the sheltered harbor waters provide a quieter way to explore, while anglers target walleye, perch, and smallmouth bass from both shore and boat.

Hiking trails wind through diverse habitats — from mature hardwood forests to open meadows and marsh edges — offering a surprisingly varied landscape for a relatively flat park. Winter brings cross-country skiing and ice fishing when conditions allow.

The park’s campground is one of the largest in the Ohio state park system, with hundreds of sites ranging from full-hookup RV spots to more secluded tent areas. Reservations are strongly recommended for summer weekends, as the campground fills quickly.

Visit between late May and early October for the best swimming and camping weather, though spring migration season (April–May) rewards birders with exceptional sightings along the Lake Erie flyway.
