Built in 1897 on the southwestern shore of South Bass Island in Put-in-Bay Township, Ohio, this Queen Anne–style lighthouse is one of the most architecturally distinctive on the Great Lakes. Its square brick tower and attached keeper’s dwelling feature an unusual integrated design that sets it apart from typical lakefront lights. The lighthouse was decommissioned and is no longer active. It is not open to the public, so visitors cannot climb the tower, but the exterior can be viewed and photographed from nearby paths. Golden hour on summer evenings offers the best light for photography. Nearby attractions include Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, the Put-in-Bay village, and Lake Erie island wineries.
