Middle Bass Island State Park
Ohio (Ottawa County)
Based on my knowledge of Middle Bass Island State Park, here’s the description:
Middle Bass Island State Park sits on one of Lake Erie’s quieter western islands in Ottawa County, Ohio — a place where the pace slows the moment you step off the ferry. Unlike its boisterous neighbor Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island, Middle Bass offers a more laid-back island experience where nature takes center stage.
The park hugs the island’s southeastern shoreline, offering direct access to rocky Lake Erie beaches perfect for wading, swimming, and watching spectacular sunsets over the water. Anglers will find excellent walleye, smallmouth bass, and perch fishing in the surrounding waters, making this a favorite staging point for fishing charters and shore casting alike. Hiking trails wind through the park’s wooded interior, where birders can spot migratory species that use the Lake Erie islands as critical stopover habitat during spring and fall migrations.
A small marina provides docking for boaters exploring the island chain, and picnic areas with shelters make for comfortable afternoons by the water. The park offers limited seasonal camping — check with Ohio DNR for current availability, as island camping fills quickly during summer weekends.
The best time to visit is June through September, when ferry service runs regularly from Catawba Island on the mainland. July and August bring the warmest swimming conditions, while September offers smaller crowds and prime fishing. Plan to bring supplies, as amenities on Middle Bass Island are minimal compared to the mainland.
Getting here is half the adventure — the Miller Ferry or the Sonny-S ferry will get you across in about 20 minutes.
