Standing on the Patuxent River in southern Maryland, Cedar Point Light was built in 1896 as a caisson-style lighthouse to guide vessels through the river’s treacherous shallows. Its distinctive hexagonal dwelling, perched atop a concrete foundation rising from the water, makes it one of the most photographed Chesapeake Bay lighthouses. Now inactive and closed to the public, the lighthouse can only be viewed from the water or nearby shorelines — no climbing is available. Golden hour and early morning fog create the most dramatic photography conditions. Nearby, visitors can explore the Calvert Marine Museum, fossil-rich Calvert Cliffs State Park, and Solomons Island’s charming waterfront restaurants and marinas along the lower Patuxent.
